[ Yousuf Karsh / Photographer / ]Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) is one of the masters of 20th century photography. His body of work includes portraits of statesmen, artists, musicians, authors, scientists, and men and women of accomplishment. His extraordinary and unique portfolio presents the viewer with an intimate and compassionate view of humanity.

ユーサフ・カーシュの写真は、彼を有名にするきっかけとなった雑誌「LIFE」の表紙を飾ったウィンストン・チャーチルよりも、アーネスト・ヘミングウェイのポートレートの方が、ぼくは良く覚えている。

THE WORK Slection of His Work | Portraits

モノトーンの肖像画のようなタッチの写真は、「いい感じ」というようなライトな印象ではなく写真がもつ「物語素の束」が、写真と対峙するという意味の「鑑賞」を求められているような気がする。好きな写真家の一人という訳ではありませんが、あのポートレートのカメラマンがユーサフ・カーシュだったんだ、ということでメモしておきます。
